Christmas, the season of joy, giving, God and family. But not everyone is feeling merry and bright. Holidays can be especially hard navigating difficult family dynamics, over spending, grieving a loss, or simply feeling alone. Even when you’re in a large group.
What if we exchanged anxiety and expectations to giving and hope?
Here are some ideas:
Prepare - Slow down and meditate on the reason for this celebration; the birth of Christ, who came as both servant and Savior. (Though we celebrate on Christmas, it’s not the actual day Jesus was born)
Simplify - Cut back on last minute gifts, no one will notice. Instead observe and serve wherever Christmas finds you.
Spread Cheer – Take time out to make a call, send a note or invite someone to celebrate with you.
Look Around – Christmas lights and festive music are spectacular this time of year. Enjoy the beauty, it elevates your spirits.
Remember Charlie Brown – Holidays and the commercialism can surely get us down. But Linus had the answer when he recited the Christmas story from Luke. Reflecting on truth centers us to shine bright during trying times. And sometimes a new focus is all we need.
Luke 2:8-14
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying:
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
